   Rheumatology.

Анотація: This book adopts a case-based approach to the management of patellofemoral disorders with the aim of helping orthopaedic surgeons at all levels of experience to decide whether individual patients referred with patellofemoral problems should be treated conservatively or operatively. A series of real-life case stories are used to illustrate every stage of the decision-making process and to explore the reader’s higher-order thinking around patient management. In each case study, the patient’s history, clinical and imaging findings, and management are reported, during the course of which the reader is asked searching questions. The reader is then able to compare his or her responses with those given by the authors, which are provided at the end of each case-specific chapter. This format ensures that knowledge and understanding improve as the reader progresses through the book. Although the cases are addressed primarily from the standpoint of the orthopaedic surgeon, the dominant management strategy is non-operative in many of them. Beyond surgeons, the book will also be of value for musculoskeletal physiotherapists with a particular interest in the knee.

Анотація: This book is exceptional in providing detailed state of the art guidance on all aspects of transfer of the latissimus dorsi tendon for indications including irreparable posterosuperior rotator cuff tears, irreparable subscapularis tears, and shoulder replacement. In addition to clear, well-illustrated descriptions of arthroscopically assisted surgical technique, readers will find helpful information on biomechanics, surgical indications, post-transfer rehabilitation, and complications and their management. Outcomes from individual studies and meta-analyses are evaluated, and a feature of special interest is the presentation of experiences and results in a series of more than 430 patients using the surgical technique first described by Enrico Gervasi more than 10 years ago. This technique involves modifications in both preparation of the footprint for the latissimus dorsi tendon and the biomechanical features of the tendon transfer and is very different from the procedure proposed by Christian Gerber. The book will be of high value for all orthopedic surgeons who perform this complex shoulder surgery, as well as for residents and fellows-in-training.

Анотація: Setting out from the premise that “a picture is worth more than a thousand words”, this book presents a superb set of illustrations, with accompanying clinical data, relating to a series of cases from a single surgeon registry. The series has the benefit of offering exceptionally homogeneous data from patients who have undergone total hip replacement (THR) and have been subjected to long-term follow-up with repeated acquisition of radiographs. This THR registry was established at the time when the Orthopaedic Department of the University of Athens became one of the first centers in Greece to perform THR. It now offers a huge database of unparalleled interest that includes approximately 1000 THRs performed by one of the authors (G. Hartofilakidis) between 1973 and 1994, with subsequent continuous follow-up. The cases with series of preoperative radiographs are of special interest, as they indicate the natural history of different types of hip disorders. In some cases of congenital hip disease, previous radiographs dating back to early childhood are available. Key messages and lessons learned are clearly spelled out. The book will be of high value for all orthopaedic surgeons who are interested in hip reconstruction surgery.

Анотація: This book outlines the consensus findings of the ISAKOS Upper Extremity Committee regarding the treatment options for patients suffering from shoulder instability. The aim is to furnish readers with a precise knowledge of the presenting features of conditions typical of different ages, thereby facilitating assessment of patient characteristics and optimal treatment decision making based on the consensus of the Committee. All age groups are covered, from the very young through to the older patient. The structuring of the book essentially according to age group reflects the fact that certain forms of shoulder instability are observed at different ages. For example, while young patients tend to demonstrate instability combined with hyperlaxity, in later years, bony defects of the glenoid and humerus gain in importance. Similarly, the scope for conservative treatment varies across the life span. Each management-oriented chapter of the book includes information and guidance on anatomy, clinical examination, imaging, surgical indications and technique, rehabilitation, outcomes, and complications and their avoidance, and the text is supported by numerous high-quality illustrations.

Анотація: This book was written for orthopedic and plastic surgeons who wish to learn about reconstructive surgery of the extremities and trunk. For reconstructions of the extremities and trunk, surgeons need information on both orthopedic and plastic surgery. However, orthopedic surgeons are generally not familiar with the reconstruction of soft tissue, and plastic surgeons have little experience with osseo-tendinous system reconstructions. For those reasons, there is a definite need for a book detailing both fields of surgery. Because many existing books focus on only the type of flap, it is difficult for doctors to distinguish which flap is best for their patients in need of reconstructive surgery. In this book, chapters are based not on the flap but the injury site. In the each chapter, pitfalls and candidate flaps are described for the reconstruction of each site. Additionally, the operative steps are explained with the help of numerous high-quality photos, offering a unique valuable resource for orthopedic and plastic surgeons faced with these challenges. .

Анотація: In this booklet, experts from across the world, including members of the ISAKOS Knee Arthroplasty Committee, offer clear, up-to-date guidance on all aspects of soft tissue or ligament balancing in primary total knee arthroplasty with the aim of enabling the reader to achieve optimal patient outcomes. After an introduction explaining the normal soft tissue condition in the native knee, surgical procedures are described, including techniques for the management of severe deformity. The most striking feature of the booklet, however, is the many pages devoted to the accurate evaluation and clinical relevance of ligament balancing. Different techniques and devices for intraoperative soft tissue assessment are discussed, highlighting, for example, the use of gap-measuring devices or trial liners with load-bearing sensors to achieve more objective evaluation. Above all, special attention is devoted to the crucial issue of the impact of intraoperative soft tissue balance on postoperative results. In the closing chapter, very experienced surgeons introduce intraoperative troubleshooting in order to assist successful completion of arthroplasty.

Анотація: This handbook provides detailed, state of the art information on simple and complex rotator cuff tears that will be of value in daily clinical practice. It covers all relevant aspects, including basic science, pathogenesis, clinical and instrumental evaluation, and treatment techniques. Drawing on the results of recent studies, the book will enable the reader to better understand how tears occur and what treatment should be employed in different circumstances. Rotator cuff tear has always attracted great interest because it may cause shoulder pain, loss of strength, simple or complex disabilities, and partial or total inability to work, reducing quality of life. The goals of cuff repair are to restore footprint anatomy with biomechanically secure, tension-free construction that promotes biological healing at the tendon-to-bone interface. Even today, there is cause for discussion about when and how to perform surgical repair and on what to do in cases of irreparable rupture. This book casts light on such issues. It is especially designed for shoulder surgeons and rehabilitation specialists and will also be of value for residents and shoulder fellows.

Анотація: This book is a practical, step-by-step guide to orthopedic examination and diagnosis. The author explains a systematic classification of clinical findings that has proven very useful in diagnosing orthopedic disorders in daily routine. The approach to examination begins with a checklist covering the complete patient history, including subjective descriptions of complaints. This is followed by a stepwise approach to physical examination of the patient and collection of clinical findings. Photographs and illustrations clearly depict the necessary examination techniques. The main symptoms are then determined from the patient history and clinical findings, leading to a diagnosis. An overview of all relevant orthopedic conditions for each region of the body facilitates differential diagnosis and thereby completes the examination findings. This book will be of particular value for new residents in orthopedics and trauma but will also be useful for the experienced physician as a means of refreshing knowledge or as a reference.

Анотація: This book, written by leading experts in the field, is a comprehensive guide to the best available techniques in Achilles tendon surgery. Each surgical procedure is described step by step, covering all of the approaches employed for the most common and important Achilles tendon pathologies. The clear descriptions are complemented by superb drawings prepared by a medical artist on the basis of photographs supplied by the authors. Pearls and possible pitfalls are identified to ensure optimal outcomes for patients. The book is the outcome of a collaboration among international Achilles tendon experts – the Achilles Tendon Study Group – that has already resulted in four other books on current concepts relating to the Achilles tendon. Like these previous volumes, The Achilles Tendon – An Atlas of Surgical Procedures is based on the highest level of evidence and expertise. It will be invaluable for orthopaedic surgeons, trauma surgeons, and residents, assisting them in their daily clinical work.
