Анотація: Setting out from the premise that “a picture is worth more than a thousand words”, this book presents a superb set of illustrations, with accompanying clinical data, relating to a series of cases from a single surgeon registry. The series has the benefit of offering exceptionally homogeneous data from patients who have undergone total hip replacement (THR) and have been subjected to long-term follow-up with repeated acquisition of radiographs. This THR registry was established at the time when the Orthopaedic Department of the University of Athens became one of the first centers in Greece to perform THR. It now offers a huge database of unparalleled interest that includes approximately 1000 THRs performed by one of the authors (G. Hartofilakidis) between 1973 and 1994, with subsequent continuous follow-up. The cases with series of preoperative radiographs are of special interest, as they indicate the natural history of different types of hip disorders. In some cases of congenital hip disease, previous radiographs dating back to early childhood are available. Key messages and lessons learned are clearly spelled out. The book will be of high value for all orthopaedic surgeons who are interested in hip reconstruction surgery.

Анотація: This book describes plastic surgery treatments in children for e.g. cleft lip and palate, polydactyly and syndactyly, pigment lesions, benign and malign skin and soft tissue tumors, and vascular anomalies. Every chapter starts with a short introduction, followed by sections on patient evaluation, treatment options and postoperative care. Supporting images and pitfalls are also included. Based on the authors experience, the book offers pediatric plastic surgeons a valuable guide in their everyday work, while also introducing interested practitioners to the field.  Pediatric plastic surgery is a specific field of surgery which includes reconstructive and aesthetic-cosmetic procedures in children. The majority of procedures are reconstructive in nature, making aesthetic considerations especially important. As aesthetic procedures in children are not so frequent, only a small group of clinicians are familiar with this part of surgery.

Анотація: Congenital Heart Disease in Pediatric and Adult Patients: Anesthetic and Perioperative Management provides a comprehensive, up-to-date overview of care of the pediatric patient undergoing cardiac surgery and anesthesia. After introductory chapters that encompass pediatric cardiovascular embryology, physiology and pharmacology, diagnostic approaches and preoperative considerations are explained. The intraoperative management of a wide range of specific lesions is then discussed, with full descriptions of anesthesia plans added with descriptions on diagnostic methods and surgical interventions. Postoperative care is also addressed, and a concluding section considers anesthesia outside the cardiac operating room. In the twenty-first century, advances in minimally invasive technology have led to the introduction of a wide array of pediatric cardiac procedures. More traditional surgical procedures have also been transformed by new devices and surgical approaches. The cardiac anesthesiologist is faced with an ever-increasing role in the perioperative care of pediatric patients undergoing cardiologic procedures in operating rooms, as well as less conventional locations. In this book, accomplished experts from around the world in the fields of pediatric anesthesia, cardiology, and cardiac surgery describe the multiple facets of caring for this very unique patient population.

   General Surgery.

Анотація: The previous edition of this book was based on a simple but essential philosophy: provide a practical and up-to-date resource for the practicing surgeon detailing the specific needs and special considerations surrounding the surgical care of children. The second edition of Fundamentals of Pediatric Surgery stays true to the philosophy of the original with several significant enhancements. As well as encompassing the most up-to-date and practical clinical information for the experienced surgeon written in a straightforward narrative style, each chapter provides a rationale for the proposed approach based on the scientific evidence available in the literature and the author’s personal clinical experience, supplies a detailed algorithm or clinical protocol in a graphic format, initiates a discussion regarding unanswered questions and proposals for future studies, and includes a list of suggested readings. Chapters cover in great detail a broad range of pediatric general surgery topics, including disorders of all major organ systems of the abdomen and thorax, congenital anomalies presenting in the newborn period, and a variety of maladies germane to the growing field of fetal surgery. The authors also provide authoritative discussions of therapeutic methods and surgical techniques that range from the traditional to the modern, including time-honored open operations, contemporary minimally invasive interventions, and emerging technologies such as single-site and robotic surgery. Written by experts in the field, Fundamentals of Pediatric Surgery, Second Edition is a definitive source of readily available clinical information that residents, fellows or attending surgeons can use to take care of actual patients in real time. .

Анотація: The purpose of this book is to contribute to basic and clinical medical research on cochlear implants for inner ear malformation and cochlear nerve deficiency. Cochlear implantation for children is performed worldwide, and the outcomes concerning speech and hearing acquisition are epoch-making. However, there are some difficulties associated with applying this operative treatment to patients who have complicated inner ear malformations or cochlear nerve deficiencies that have slowed the development of their speech, hearing, and/or sense of balance. The first part of the book outlines the fundamental aspects of inner ear maldevelopment to facilitate readers’ understanding of cochlear implantation from the point of view of embryology, morphology, and genetics. In turn, the second part describes current clinical cases and presents successful clinical reports. The book offers a primary resource for otolaryngologists, neurologists, and pediatricians with an interest in this field.
