Анотація: This book adopts a case-based approach to the management of patellofemoral disorders with the aim of helping orthopaedic surgeons at all levels of experience to decide whether individual patients referred with patellofemoral problems should be treated conservatively or operatively. A series of real-life case stories are used to illustrate every stage of the decision-making process and to explore the reader’s higher-order thinking around patient management. In each case study, the patient’s history, clinical and imaging findings, and management are reported, during the course of which the reader is asked searching questions. The reader is then able to compare his or her responses with those given by the authors, which are provided at the end of each case-specific chapter. This format ensures that knowledge and understanding improve as the reader progresses through the book. Although the cases are addressed primarily from the standpoint of the orthopaedic surgeon, the dominant management strategy is non-operative in many of them. Beyond surgeons, the book will also be of value for musculoskeletal physiotherapists with a particular interest in the knee.

Анотація: This book is exceptional in providing detailed state of the art guidance on all aspects of transfer of the latissimus dorsi tendon for indications including irreparable posterosuperior rotator cuff tears, irreparable subscapularis tears, and shoulder replacement. In addition to clear, well-illustrated descriptions of arthroscopically assisted surgical technique, readers will find helpful information on biomechanics, surgical indications, post-transfer rehabilitation, and complications and their management. Outcomes from individual studies and meta-analyses are evaluated, and a feature of special interest is the presentation of experiences and results in a series of more than 430 patients using the surgical technique first described by Enrico Gervasi more than 10 years ago. This technique involves modifications in both preparation of the footprint for the latissimus dorsi tendon and the biomechanical features of the tendon transfer and is very different from the procedure proposed by Christian Gerber. The book will be of high value for all orthopedic surgeons who perform this complex shoulder surgery, as well as for residents and fellows-in-training.

Анотація: Thanks to an increasing life expectancy of our populations the number of elderly persons is steadily growing and will continue to do so. Among these, the rate of persons with illnesses and degenerative diseases is significant. The prevalence of osteoporosis is especially high in elderly women and leads to typical fracture patterns. Hip fractures, proximal humerus fractures, distal radius fractures and fractures of the vertebral column are the most common. In the last decade, we are confronted with a sharp increase of fragility fractures of the pelvis. Until now, there is no consensus on how to identify and classify these lesions and there are no guidelines for treatment and after treatment. In particular, there is no common view on which patients need an operative treatment and which technique of osteosynthesis should be used. This book fills the gap in available literature and gives a state of the art guide to the treatment of fragility fractures of the pelvis. With the sharp increase of these fractures and the lacking consensus, Fragility Fractures of the Pelvis will become indispensable for the physicians who take care of elderly patients with this pathology. Written by a team of expert opinion leaders, the aim of this book is to contribute to the scientific discussion in this area and to help provide the optimal care for these patients.

Анотація: Setting out from the premise that “a picture is worth more than a thousand words”, this book presents a superb set of illustrations, with accompanying clinical data, relating to a series of cases from a single surgeon registry. The series has the benefit of offering exceptionally homogeneous data from patients who have undergone total hip replacement (THR) and have been subjected to long-term follow-up with repeated acquisition of radiographs. This THR registry was established at the time when the Orthopaedic Department of the University of Athens became one of the first centers in Greece to perform THR. It now offers a huge database of unparalleled interest that includes approximately 1000 THRs performed by one of the authors (G. Hartofilakidis) between 1973 and 1994, with subsequent continuous follow-up. The cases with series of preoperative radiographs are of special interest, as they indicate the natural history of different types of hip disorders. In some cases of congenital hip disease, previous radiographs dating back to early childhood are available. Key messages and lessons learned are clearly spelled out. The book will be of high value for all orthopaedic surgeons who are interested in hip reconstruction surgery.

Анотація: This book focuses on orthogeriatrics, a topic that has received little attention in the literature to date. As active members of the Fragility Fracture Network (FFN), the editors and most of the authors of this book have gathered all essential expertise on hip fracture management in a single volume. The 14 chapters provide a complete overview of how to approach fractures in elderly patients, starting with the epidemiology of hip fractures and subsequently addressing osteoporosis, surgery, anesthesia, medical management of frailty, and peri-operative complications. Attention is also given to rehabilitation and nursing, as well as to the psychological evaluation of the patient and the caregivers, thus emphasizing the importance of a multidisciplinary approach. Thanks to its clinical and practice-oriented nature, the book will especially be of interest to residents and young geriatricians, as well as orthopaedic surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses dealing with elderly fracture patients in all parts of the world.

Анотація: This book outlines the consensus findings of the ISAKOS Upper Extremity Committee regarding the treatment options for patients suffering from shoulder instability. The aim is to furnish readers with a precise knowledge of the presenting features of conditions typical of different ages, thereby facilitating assessment of patient characteristics and optimal treatment decision making based on the consensus of the Committee. All age groups are covered, from the very young through to the older patient. The structuring of the book essentially according to age group reflects the fact that certain forms of shoulder instability are observed at different ages. For example, while young patients tend to demonstrate instability combined with hyperlaxity, in later years, bony defects of the glenoid and humerus gain in importance. Similarly, the scope for conservative treatment varies across the life span. Each management-oriented chapter of the book includes information and guidance on anatomy, clinical examination, imaging, surgical indications and technique, rehabilitation, outcomes, and complications and their avoidance, and the text is supported by numerous high-quality illustrations.

As such, the main benefit of this book is as a diagnostic tool to assess children with orthopedic disease. Designed to lead the reader from the initial physical examination through to making the most likely diagnosis, there is advice on what additional studies are meaningful, when there is an indication for referral and what advice can be provided for the patient. The value of the book is increased by hundreds of color images, thus making it easily accessible for pediatric orthopedic surgeons, pediatrician s, pediatric physiotherapists, podiatrists, pediatricians, rehabilitation specialists and primary care physicians with an interest in the subject.

Анотація: This book was written for orthopedic and plastic surgeons who wish to learn about reconstructive surgery of the extremities and trunk. For reconstructions of the extremities and trunk, surgeons need information on both orthopedic and plastic surgery. However, orthopedic surgeons are generally not familiar with the reconstruction of soft tissue, and plastic surgeons have little experience with osseo-tendinous system reconstructions. For those reasons, there is a definite need for a book detailing both fields of surgery. Because many existing books focus on only the type of flap, it is difficult for doctors to distinguish which flap is best for their patients in need of reconstructive surgery. In this book, chapters are based not on the flap but the injury site. In the each chapter, pitfalls and candidate flaps are described for the reconstruction of each site. Additionally, the operative steps are explained with the help of numerous high-quality photos, offering a unique valuable resource for orthopedic and plastic surgeons faced with these challenges. .
