Анотація: This book explores the intersection between adaptation studies and what James F. English has called the “economy of prestige,” which includes formal prize culture as well as less tangible expressions such as canon formation, fandom, authorship, and performance. The chapters explore how prestige can affect many facets of the adaptation process, including selection, approach, and reception. The first section of this volume deals directly with cycles of influence involving prizes such as the Pulitzer, the Man Booker, and other major awards. The second section focuses on the juncture where adaptation, the canon, and awards culture meet, while the third considers alternative modes of locating and expressing prestige through adapted and adaptive intertexts. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of adaptation, cultural sociology, film, and literature.

Анотація: This book proposes new methodological tools and approaches in order to tease out and elicit the different facets of urban fragmentation through the medium of cinema and the moving image, as a contribution to our understanding of cities and their topographies. In doing so it makes a significant contribution to the literature in the growing field of cartographic cinema and urban cinematics, by charting the many trajectories and points of contact between film and its topographical context. Under the influence of new technologies, the opening and the availability of previously unexplored archives but also the contribution of new scholars with novel approaches in addition to new work by experienced academics, Cinematic Urban Geographies demonstrates how we can reread the cinematic past with a view to construct the urban present and anticipate its future. .

Анотація: This book presents the first English introduction to the broad history of the Gothic mode in Spain. It focuses on key literary periods, such as Romanticism, the fin-de-siècle, spiritualist writings of the early-twentieth century, and the cinematic and literary booms of the 1970s and 2000s. With illustrative case studies, Aldana Reyes demonstrates how the Gothic mode has been a permanent yet ever-shifting fixture of the literary and cinematic landscape of Spain since the late-eighteenth century. He proposes that writers and filmmakers alike welcomed the Gothic as a liberating and transgressive artistic language.

Анотація: This book identifies and analyzes the ways in which RuPaul’s Drag Race has reshaped the visibility of drag culture in the US and internationally, as well as how the program has changed understandings of reality TV. This edited volume illustrates how drag has become a significant aspect of LGBTQ experience and identity globally through RuPaul’s Drag Race, and how the show has reformed a media landscape in which competition and reality itself are understood as given. Taking on lenses addressing race, ethnicity, geographical origin, cultural identity, physicality and body image, and participation in drag culture across the globe, this volume offers critical, non-traditional, and first-hand perspectives on drag culture.

Анотація: This book focuses on the output of women film directors in the period post Millennium when the number of female directors working within the film industry rose substantially. Despite the fact that nationally and internationally women film directors are underrepresented within the industry, there is a wealth of talent currently working in Britain. During the early part of the 2000s, the UKFC instigated policies and strategies for gender equality and since then the British Film Institute has continued to encourage diversity. British Women Directors in the New Millennium therefore examines the production, distribution and exhibition of female directors’ work in light of policy. The book is divided into two sections: part one includes a historical background of women directors working in the twentieth century before discussing the various diversity funding opportunities available since 2000. The second part of the book examines the innovation, creativity and resourcefulness of British female film directors, as well as the considerable variety of films that they produce, selecting specific examples for analysis in the process.    .

Анотація: This book explores how minds at the movies understand minds in the movies and introduces readers to some fundamental principles of Cognitive Studies—namely conceptual blending, Theory of Mind, and empathy/perspective-taking—through their application to film analysis. A cognitive approach to recent popular historical films demonstrates cinema’s potential to stimulate viewers’ critical thinking about crucial events of the past century. Diverging from the focus on narrative processing in traditional cognitivist theory, this book examines film reception and production in the context of the latest developments in cognitive and social psychology. Turning to German cinema as a case study for this interdisciplinary partnership, Jennifer Marston William offers a fresh look at some internationally successful films of the twenty-first century, including Nowhere in Africa, Goodbye, Lenin!, Sophie Scholl, Downfall, The Lives of Others, and The Baader-Meinhof Complex.

Анотація: This edited volume is an inquiry into the representation of intimate relationships in a diverse array of media including cinema, arts, literature, picture books, advertising and popular music. It examines artistic portrayal of intimate relationships as a subversion of the boundaries between the representable and the non-representable, the real and the surreal, the visceral and the ideal, the embodied and the abstracted, the configured and transfigured. The essays focus on artistic mediation of intimacy in diverse relationships, including heterosexual, same-sex, familial, sibling' , political, and sadomasochistic. The collection offers new interdisciplinary and multicultural perspectives on current trends in the study of popular representations of intimacy; representations that affect and formulate people's most personal inspirations, desires, angsts, dreams and nightmares in an increasingly alienated, industrialized world. ‘Intimate Relationships does not only engage scholars in fields such as Cinema, Literature and Visual culture, but is inclusive of various national, ethnic, sexual, cultural and political identities. Most importantly, the collection recognizes that intimacy is a complex concept that can neither be quantified nor contained within the realm of romantic / erotic love. As a result, Intimate Relationships provides a new definition of intimacy and the manners in which it can be qualified.’ - Dr. Dror Abend-David, Lecturer in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, University of Florida, USA ‘A stunningly original contribution to scholarship on the multi-faceted topic of intimacy. Offering insightful analyses of material ranging from film to literature, from internet sites to pop music, and encompassing such diverse subjects as bodily functions, mainstream pleasures, and inter-generational relationships, these essays offer new critical perspectives and food for thought. Ambitious in scope, this collection is dazzling and challenging; the variety of approaches and cultures, and the wide choice of primary materials, will fascinate readers wishing to deepen their understanding of this essential aspect of being human.’ - Dr Elisabetta Girelli, Senior Lecturer in Film Studies, St Andrews University, UK This edited volume is an inquiry into the representation of intimate relationships in a diverse array of media including cinema, arts, literature, picture books, advertising and popular music. Анотація: This book analyzes Walt Disney’s impact on entertainment, new media, and consumer culture in terms of a materialist, psychoanalytic approach to fantasy. The study opens with a taxonomy of narrative fantasy along with a discussion of fantasy as a key concept within psychoanalytic discourse. Zornado reads Disney’s full-length animated features of the “golden era” as symbolic responses to cultural and personal catastrophe, and presents Disneyland as a monument to Disney fantasy and one man’s singular, perverse desire. What follows after is a discussion of the “second golden age” of Disney and the rise of Pixar Animation as neoliberal nostalgia in crisis. The study ends with a reading of George Lucas as latter-day Disney and Star Wars as Disney fantasy. This study should appeal to film and media studies college undergraduates, graduates students and scholars interested in Disney.

Анотація: This volume brings together international scholars to engage in the question of how film has represented a figure that for many is simply labelled ‘prostitute’. The prostitute is one of the most enduring female figures. She has global historical resonance and stories, images and narratives surrounding her, and her experiences, circulate transnationally. As this book will explore, the broad term prostitute can cover a variety of experiences and representations that are both repressive and also have the potential to empower women and disrupt cultural expectations. The contributors aim to consider how frequently 19th-century narratives of female prostitution—hence the label ‘fallen women’—are still recycled in contemporary visual contexts, and to understand how widespread, and in what contexts, the destigmatization of female sex work is underway on screen.

Анотація: This book argues that recent developments in contemporary comedy have changed not just the way we laugh but the way we understand the world. Drawing on a range of contemporary televisual, cinematic and digital examples, from Seinfeld and Veep to Family Guy and Chappelle’s Show, Holm explores how humour has become a central site of cultural politics in the twenty-first century. More than just a form of entertainment, humour has come to play a central role in the contemporary media environment, shaping how we understand ideas of freedom, empathy, social boundaries and even logic. Through an analysis of humour as a political and aesthetic category, Humour as Politics challenges older models of laughter as a form of dissent and instead argues for a new theory of humour as the cultural expression of our (neo)liberal moment. .

Анотація: ‘Undoubtedly a significant volume on the study of the interplay between politics and satire. Highlighting satire's open meanings and manifestation in untold forms, the book is informed by an impressive level of historical analysis.’ - Alex Sutton, International Relations, University of Chichester, UK ‘Places political humor in compelling contexts. A must-read for students of global satire in the Digital Age.’ - Paul Lewis, Boston College, USA. Author of Cracking Up: American Humor in a Time of Conflict (2006) This book examines the multi-media explosion of contemporary political satire. Rooted in 18th century Augustan practice, satire’s indelible link with politics underlies today’s universal disgust with the ways of elected politicians. This study interrogates the impact of British and American satirical media on political life, with a special focus on political cartoons and the levelling humour of Australasian satirists.

The field of Film-Music Studies has been increasingly dominated by musicologists and this book  brings the discipline back squarely into the domain of of Film Studies. Blending Neoformalism with Gestalt Psychology and Leonard B. Meyer's musicology, this study treats music as a cinematic element and offers scholars and students of both music and film a set of tools to help them analyse the wide ranging impact that music has in films.

Анотація: This book explores Alan Moore’s career as a cartoonist, as shaped by his transdisciplinary practice as a poet, illustrator, musician and playwright as well as his involvement in the Northampton Arts Lab and the hippie counterculture in which it took place. It traces Moore’s trajectory out from the underground comix scene of the 1970s and into a commercial music press rocked by the arrival of punk. In doing so it uncovers how performance has shaped Moore’s approach to comics and their political potential. Drawing on the work of Bertolt Brecht, who similarly fused political dissent with experimental popular art, this book considers what looking strangely at Alan Moore as cartoonist tells us about comics, their visual and material form, and the performance and politics of their reading and making.

Анотація: ‘Contemporary Film Music is an outstanding contribution to the documentation of the profound shifts in film scoring that have occurred in this new century. Thoughtful and provocative essays alternate with fascinating interviews with some of those composers working in this new reality. Highly recommended…’ - Mychael Danna, Academy Award-winning film composer, Canada. The purpose of this book, through its very creation, is to strengthen the dialogue between practitioner and theorist. To that end, a film academic, a composer, and a composer/musicologist have collaborated as editors on this book, which is in turn comprised of interviews with composers alongside complementary chapters that focus on a particular feature of the composer’s approach or style, written by a musicologist or film academic who specializes in that particular element of the composer’s output. In the interview portions of this book, eight major film composers discuss their work from the early 1980s to the present day. The focus is on the practical considerations of film composition, the relationship each composer has with the moving image, technical considerations, personal motivations in composing, the relationships composers have with their directors, and their own creative processes. Contemporary Film Music also explores the contemporary influence of electronic music, issues surrounding the mixing of soundtracks, music theory, and the evolution of composers’ musical voices. Lindsay Coleman is a film academic and an independent documentary producer. His most recent books include Sex and Storytelling in Modern Cinema and The Philosophy of Pornography. In addition to these, he is working on a series of books on cinematography, film editing, musical composition for films, and visual effects in modern cinema. Lindsay is also working on documentary projects on Hollywood film editing and Australian film cinematography. Joakim Tillman is Associate Professor in musicology at Stockholm University. His research has appeared in numerous scholarly journals and edited volumes, for instance the essay “Postmodernism and Art Music in the German Debate” in Postmodern Music/Postmodern Thought (2002). His current research is focused on the film music of Elliot Goldenthal, James Horner, and Hans Zimmer.

Анотація: This volume is dedicated to the elusive category of the Hitchcock Touch, the qualities and techniques which had manifested in Alfred Hitchcock’s own films yet which cannot be limited to the realm of Hitchcockian cinema alone. While the first section of this collection focuses on Hitchcock’s own films and the various people who made important artistic contributions to them, the subsequent chapters draw wider circles. Case studies focusing on the branding effects associated with Hitchcockian cinema and its seductive qualities highlight the paratextual dimension of his films and the importance of his well-publicized persona, while the final section addresses both Hitchcock’s formative period, as well as other filmmakers who drew upon the Hitchcock Touch. The collection not only serves as an introduction to the field of Hitchcock scholarship for a wider audience, it also delivers in-depth assessments of the lesser-known early period of his career, in addition to providing new takes on canonical films like Vertigo (1958) and Frenzy (1972).

Анотація: In contrast to the main body of current Victorian detective criticism, which tends to concentrate on Conan Doyle’s creation and only uses other detectives as a backdrop, the texts gathered in this volume examine various contemporary ways of (re)presenting real and fictional detectives that originated in or are otherwise associated with that era: Inspector Bucket, Sergeant Cuff, Inspector Reid, Tobias Gregson, Flaxman Low, and psychiatrists as detectives. Such a collection allows for a critical re-assessment of both the detectives’ importance to the Victorian literature and culture and provides a better basis for understanding the reasons behind their contemporary returns, re-imaginings and re-creations, contributing to the creation of a base for further cultural and critical works dealing with reworkings of the Victorian era. Lucyna Krawczyk-Żywko is Assistant Professor at the Institute of English Studies, University of Warsaw, Poland. Her main research area is contemporary reimaginings of Victorian villains and detectives, historic and fictional. She has published primarily on Sherlock Holmes and Jack the Ripper.

Анотація: This book examines how television has been transformed over the past twenty years by the introduction of new viewing technologies including DVDs, DVRs and streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. It shows that these platforms have profoundly altered the ways we access and watch television, enabling viewers to pause, rewind, record and archive the once irreversible flow of broadcast TV. JP Kelly argues that changes in the technological landscape of television has encouraged the production of narrative forms that both explore and embody new industrial temporalities. Focusing on US television but also considering the role of TV within a global marketplace, the author identifies three distinct narrative temporalities: “acceleration” (24; Prison Break), “complexity” (Lost; FlashForward), and “retrospection” (Mad Men).  Through industrial-textual analysis of television shows, this cross-disciplinary study locates these na rrative temporalities in their socio-cultural contexts and examines connections between production, distribution, and narrative form in the contemporary television industry.

Анотація: This book places a focus on the regimes of in/visibility and representation in Europe and offers an innovative perspective on the topic of global capitalism in relation to questions of race, class, gender and migration, as well as historicization of biopolitics and (de)coloniality. The aim of this volume is to revisit theories of art, new media technology, and aesthetics under the weight of political processes of discrimination, racism, anti-Semitism and new forms of coloniality in order to propose a new dispositive of the ontology and epistemology of the image, of life and capitalism as well as labor and modes of life. This book is firmly embedded in the present moment, when due to rapid and major changes on all levels of political and social reality the need for rearticulation in theoretical, artistic and political practices and rethinking of historical narratives becomes almost tangible.

Анотація: "Python fans who want more than 45 TV shows, five films, and stacks of DVDs, CDs, books and downloads are in for a treat. Python Beyond Python delves into areas that are often overlooked by Python fans, showing the vast reach of the legendary group. If you enjoy uninformative, dull, and non-entertaining books about Monty Python, avoid this one at all costs!" - Kim “Howard” Johnson, Author of Monty Python: From the Inside Out (2014), Monty Python's Tunisian Holiday: My Life with Brian (2008), The First 20 Years of Monty Python (1989) and Superman: True Brit (with John Cleese, 2004) ‘Python Beyond Python ventures into little known facets of Python creativity to indicate, as editor Paul N. Reinsch affirms, that the Pythons are not merely the sum total of their parts but “something else.” Without diminishing the fame and ongoing influence of the canonical Python texts, the authors expand and differentiate the range of contributions each Python makes in cultural forms beyond cinema and TV, including Broadway theatre, training videos, travel, autobiography and history writing.’ - Marcia Landy, Distinguished Professor of English/Film Studies, University of Pittsburgh, USA. Author of Monty Python’s Flying Circus (2005) and Stardom, Italian Style: Screen Performance and Personality in Italian Cinema (2008) This collection of original, interdisciplinary essays addresses the work of Monty Python members beyond the comedy show, films, and live performances. These men are prolific creators in a variety of artistic realms beyond the confines of the comedy troupe. Their work as individuals, before and after coming together as Monty Python, demonstrates a restless curiosity about culture that embraces absurdity but seldom becomes cynical. Python members collectively and individually create unique approaches to theatre, film, video games, comic books, business training videos and more. Python Beyond Python increases our understanding of this often neglected work and the meanings of Monty Python.  Paul N. Reinsch is Assistant Professor of Practice—Cinema at Texas Tech University, USA. He is the author of A Critical Bibliography of Shirley Jackson (2001).  B. Lynn Whitfield is Associate Archivist at Texas Tech University, USA. She serves on the Executive Board of the Society of Southwest Archivists and is Associate Director of the West Texas Historical Association. Robert G. Weiner is Popular Culture and Humanities Librarian at Texas Tech University, USA. He has published numerous books and articles related to popular culture.

Анотація: In 1968, Stanley Kubrick completed and released his magnum opus motion picture 2001: A Space Odyssey; a time that was also tremendously important in the formation of the psychoanalytic theory of Jacques Lacan. Bringing these figures together, Bristow offers a study that goes beyond, as the film did. He extends Lacan’s late topological insights, delves into conceptualisations of desire, in G. W. F. Hegel, Alexandre Kojève, and Lacan himself, and deals with the major themes of cuts (filmic and psychoanalytic); space; silence; surreality; and ‘das Ding’, in relation to the movie’s enigmatic monolith. This book is a tour de force of psychoanalytic theory and space odyssey that will appeal to academics and practitioners of psychoanalysis and film studies, as well as to any fan of Kubrick’s work.
