Анотація: This volume deals with the construction of categorizations of health at work on the basis of individuals’ perceptions and analyses of the psychosocial health effects at their work. The volume approaches the subject from the point of view of those who have experienced psychosocial risks at work, either by being under constraints themselves or by being witness to such constraints. Each chapter sheds light on their representations by examining how the individuals label these constraints. The book compares official categorizations of psychosocial health effects of work to unofficial categorizations, built or expressed. It shows how taking into account subjective narratives may reinforce existing strategies. By giving a central place to language in the analysis of the representations of psychosocial health at work, the volume provides additional information about the various prevention and coping strategies that can be used for dealing with the issue. Beyond some international comparisons, the book covers various national case studies, including in Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Chechnya, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, and Russia.

To the average person living in the seventeenth century, life was a series of challenges. Mortality among the young was high, and for those who survived early childhood, death in their fifties was fairly typical. Men and women might aspire to a longer life span, but even the healthiest practices were no guarantee when the overall quality of life was low. With fatal illnesses exemplified by typhoid fever on the one hand, and the arrival of yersinia pestis – plague through ports on the Mediterranean at regular intervals of several years, on the other, mortality became a foreseeable event.

Анотація: The book is a study of intra-urban inequality in quality of life (QOL) in Aizawl city. The main objectives of the study include analysis of processes and patterns of social differentiation along the three-dimensional space of Aizawl city as well as analysis of spatial inequality in QOL at the lowest administrative structure of the city. An investigation into spatial pattern of residential differentiation was done at both horizontal and vertical spaces. Spatial variation in well-being of residents of Aizawl city and the quality of their immediate environment was also studied by taking both objective and subjective indicators. The study employed a number of descriptive, inferential and multivariate statistical techniques including correlation, factor analysis, principal component analysis, cluster analysis and spatial autocorrelation methods like Moran’s I and Local Indicators of Spatial Association (LISA). Mapping techniques and graphical methods like Choropleth map, histogram and line graph were also used. With the help of factor analysis, the social space of Aizawl city was found to be differentiated along socio-economic status, family status, household size status, workers status and ethnic status. The most important factor determining residential differentiation was socio-economic status. Choropleth map of factor scores reveals that the inner city localities were dominated by high socio-economic class while poorer people dominated the peripheries. Non-local ethnic minorities were few but concentrated in some adjoining peripheral localities as well as in inner city localities which have been inhabited by their ancestors since the colonial period. Vertical pattern of residential differentiation was also analyzed by taking income variable as a proxy of socio-economic status. Multi-storey buildings in Aizawl city were co-inhabited by both richer people and poorer people. The richer people were found at the top floors while the poorer people occupied the basement floors. Normally, the owners of the buildings were found at the top floors while the basement floors were dominated by the renters. Spatial variation in QOL was measured with the help of principal component analysis as a weighting technique by taking variables pertaining to both objective and subjective QOL dimensions. The values of composite QOL index showed that the central localities have scored better than their peripheral counterparts. Correlation analysis of the relationship between objective indicators and subjective indicators provided a low positive value indicating the absence of relationship between the two dimensions of quality of life. Spatial autocorrelation analysis was also performed to see the pattern of clustering of spatially weighted QOL variables across Local Councils. With the help of Global Moran’s I, spatial clusters and spatial outliers were observed for objective dimension of QOL within the study area. The value of Moran’s I was found to be insignificant for subjective QOL dimension indicating the absence of significant pattern of clustering. Spatial clusters and spatial outliers were shown with the help of LISA map. The study also identified 7 social areas of Aizawl city on the basis of factor scores and composite scores of QOL variables calculated for all Local Councils. The identification of clusters was taken out with the help of hierarchical clustering method of cluster analysis. These clusters were labeled appropriate names and their characteristics were described in detail. The thesis concluded with recommendation of designating these social areas as ‘social development planning zones’ for obtaining inclusive development.

Анотація: This volume, edited by a political scientist and a practicing medical doctor, is organized into two parts: interpersonal and institutional trust. To gauge trust both interpersonal and institutional in 29 Asian societies, the AsiaBarometer survey, the best—and only—available such data source in the world was used. The survey, focusing on the quality of life in Asia, was carried out in the 2000s in 29 Asian societies (in East, Southeast, South, and Central Asia), and in the United States, Australia, and Russia for comparative analysis. Trust is a key intermediate variable linking an individual and a broader society. Yet systematically and scientifically assembled data have tended to be narrowly focused on Western societies. In the 2000s non-Western data on the quality of life have steadily increased. The AsiaBarometer survey, however, is the instrument that best examines the quality of life in a large number of Asian societies with nationwide random sampling and face-to-face interviewing, with the number of samples ranging from 1,000 to 3,000. In gauging interpersonal trust, the question, "Generally, do you think people can be trusted, or do you think that you can't be too careful in dealing with people (i.e., that it pays to be wary of people)?" is asked along with additional questions. In measuring institutional trust, the question is asked: "How much confidence do you place in the following institutions?" (Listed are the central government, the courts, the military, the police, political parties, the parliament, mass media, business companies, medical hospitals, and other institutions.) In examining interpersonal and institutional trust Asia-wide, special attention is paid to historical and geo-cultural backgrounds of the societies being surveyed. Examination of the link between trust of mass media and individual health and between trust in medical care and individual health focuses on Japan. Анотація: This book presents evidence that children are the real experts of their lives. 2600 boys and girls in Germany between the ages of 6 of 11 years, with and without a migration background, were interviewed. Next to established topics of family, friends, leisure time and school, the focus of this study was on the topic of justice. Children were asked what justice in their opinion was and whether they felt treated justly or not. The 3rd World Vision Study puts the subjective well-being of children into the focus and shows that children are able to report competently and authentically about their lives. This volume is of great important to researchers, policy makers and professionals interested in children’s well-being from children’s own perspectives.

Анотація: This volume connects aspects of personal health, overall well-being, and education to quality of life. It includes discussions of Galen’s and Harvey’s views of the movement of blood in human bodies, and differences in the research traditions of social indicators research and health-related quality of life research. It examines determinants of health and quality of life in a variety of populations, including the residents of the Bella Coola Valley of British Columbia, aboriginal residential school survivors in Canada, and diabetics versus non-diabetics. It describes relations between health survey and patients’ medical chart reviews, the health and quality of life of older people, and the difference between good health and a good life. Other topics explored are student quality of life, comparisons of the quality of life of students, aboriginal and unemployed people, the impact of education on happiness and well-being, and liberal education. In addition, the volume presents Einstein’s views of ethics and science, and unacknowledged authorship in scholarly publications. The final chapter gives a historical review of quality of life research in Canada over the past fifty years.
