Анотація: This volume serves as a comprehensive and useful guide for ENT and allergy physicians in the recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of patients who suffer from sinus headaches and migraines. The text reviews key issues such as identification and management of migraine, and appropriate surgical and nonsurgical treatment that is often not part of ENT or allergy resident training. With 20% of women and 6% of men having migraines (only 50% recognized) this text also serves to expand management options to physicians already medically or surgically treating sinuses or seeing cosmetic patients with head and neck concerns. Other forms of intervention in migraineurs, such as surgery, Botulinum Toxin injections and adjunctive and integrative therapy, are covered. Sinus Headache, Migraine, and the Otolaryngologist will be an invaluable resource for ENT and allergy specialists, and any physician or medical professional with an interest in sinus headache or migraine.

Анотація: This book focuses on the fundamentals of the use of biologics in asthma, describing the rationale, principles, mechanisms of action, and indications. It offers an excellent balance between basic science and the analysis of clinical trials, updating readers with new developments that are changing the global scenario for targeted biological anti-asthma therapies, especially with regard to more severe disease. A range of therapies are considered, from the humanized monoclonal anti-IgE antibody omalizumab, widely approved as add-on treatment for inadequately controlled disease, through to emerging biologics for which evidence supportive of efficacy is accumulating, including anti-IL-5, anti-IL-4, and anti-IL-13 therapies. One aspect to emerge is the variability in individual response, which suggests a need for characterization of different asthma subtypes to permit the effective implementation of phenotype-targeted treatments. This book will be of interest for pulmonologists, clinical immunologists, and physicians seeking sound information on these therapies, but also for scientists and pharmacologists wishing to enhance their knowledge of the therapeutic implications of the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie severe, uncontrolled asthma.

Анотація: Allergy is developing into one of the most prevalent diseases affecting individuals in the very early days of life. While the cause of this epidemic is still unclear, it appears that the westernized life style is playing an important role, which includes nutrition, possibly air pollution as well as hygienic conditions. While epidemiologic studies were able to narrow down these factors, basic research discovered novel mechanisms that control the organism´s tolerance against allergens. Particularly interesting is the role of microorganisms that colonize or infect a host and thereby cause damage and immunological activation followed by sensitization or exacerbation of already existing sensitizations. However at the same time microbial activation of the immune system can help to generate a protective immunity that prevents allergen sensitization. The current book is collecting these evidences and connects epidemiologic and clinical mechanistic knowledge. Only the synthesis of this knowledge will help to find solutions to the ongoing allergy epidemic in terms of public health activities, prevention and therapy.

Анотація: This well-illustrated book is a comprehensive guide to the cutaneous clinical presentations of mycobacterial infections. The Mycobacterium genus includes over 170 species, nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) having been added to the obligate human pathogens such as M. tuberculosis and M. leprae. NTM are widely distributed in the environment with high isolation rates worldwide; the skin is a major target with variable clinical manifestations. A current  resurgence in tuberculosis is aggravated by the synergy with human immunodeficiency virus, the breakdown of health care systems, and the rise in multidrug-resistant disease, as the incidence of leprosy remains stable, at around 250,000 new cases annually, regardless of effective antibiotic therapy. Presentations  of various cutaneous infections caused by mycobacteria may be overlooked by clinicians owing the lack of familiarity with tuberculosis, leprosy, and the related  NTM clinical features. This handy guide will help  the dermatologist to spot the different clinical manifestations, make a prompt diagnosis, and apply effective treatment.

Анотація: This book, based on a recent German publication, offers an overview of basic data and recent developments in the groundbreaking field of molecular allergology. It comprehensively explores the origin and structure of single allergen molecules ("components") and their utility in improving the management of type I, IgE-mediated allergic reactions and disorders like allergic respiratory diseases, food allergies, and anaphylaxis. Highly specific testing, called component-resolved diagnostics, aims to identify and utilize single molecules. Over 200 single allergens from plant or animal sources have been applied to single or multiplex laboratory testing for the presence of allergen-specific IgE. This leap in assay sensitivity and specificity has led to three major advances in patient management: discrimination between primary allergic sensitization and complex cross-reactivity, recognition of IgE profiles for certain allergens and identification of patients most likely to benefit from allergen-specific immunotherapy. The book discusses in detail the benefits and limitations of this 21st century technology, and offers suggestions for the use of molecular allergology in routine clinical practice. It is a “must read” for physicians treating allergic patients as well as scientists interested in natural allergic molecules and their interactions with the human immune system.

Анотація: This comprehensive book thoroughly covers the field of stinging insect allergy; addressing all clinical aspects, including diagnosis and therapeutic recommendations. Stinging Insect Allergy: A Clinician’s Guide begins with a look into the entomologic aspects of Hymenoptera insects (bees, vespids, wasps and ants), which cause nearly all the IgE mediated reactions due to insects. Further chapters single out and examine the unique aspects of common Hymenoptera species, such as bees and fire ants, in rich detail. Later chapters clinically review what is known about non-Hymenoptera biting insects, such as mosquitoes. In addition, multiple chapters address the overlap of Hymenoptera allergy as practiced in North America and Europe, as well as other sciences. Final chapters cover the impact ecology is having on insect allergy; and the impact insect allergy is having on other areas of medicine, such as mast cell disorders. Stinging Insect Allergy: A Clinician’s Guide is an ideal resource for medical students, residents, allergists, and general practitioners alike, and also serves as an important reference text for any practitioner of allergy and immunology who desires a complete picture of Hymenoptera and non-Hymenoptera insect allergy. .

Анотація: Primary immunodeficiency diseases (PIDs) are a group of inborn disorders of the immune system, characterized by increased susceptibility to infections, autoimmunity, and cancers. Although PIDs were previously considered rare conditions, the number of diagnosed cases is growing rapidly, and about 300 different forms of PIDs have already been recognized. Nevertheless, because of inadequate medical awareness, misdiagnosis or late diagnosis occurs in a significant number of patients, leading to avoidable morbidity and mortality. The first edition of this practical reference textbook was widely welcomed by scientists and clinicians from around the world. This new edition has been extensively revised to reflect advances in knowledge and includes various PIDs not previously covered. For each disease, information is provided on definition, etiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and management. Every effort has been made to ensure that, throughout, the text is easy to read and readily comprehensible. The book will represent an ideal resource for specialists when engaging in diagnosis, clinical decision-making, and treatment planning. It will also prove invaluable for doctors in training and other physicians and nurses who wish to learn more about PIDs.
