Анотація: This thesis offers novel methods for catalyst and process design for the selective hydrogenation of acetylene and 1,3-butadiene. The author predicts the properties of supported Pd–Ni bimetallic catalysts using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD). The excellent correlation between model surfaces and supported catalysts demonstrates the feasibility of designing effective bimetallic catalysts for selective hydrogenation reactions. The author also proposes a method for designing non-precious metal catalysts to replace precious metals. She modifies the process of selective hydrogenation of acetylene by coupling the selective adsorption to the selective hydrogenation in the liquid phase, as a result of which the ethylene selectivity is greatly improved and heat transfer is greatly enhanced. Lastly, by analyzing the mechanism of liquid-phase hydrogenation, the author proposes a multi-stage slurry bed reactor for industrial applications.

Анотація: This Brief provides a comprehensive overview of NMR spectroscopy, covering techniques such as 1H, 13C, and 31P NMR, which are reliable tools to determine lipid oxidation level, to identify oxidation products, and to elucidate oxidation mechanism. The Brief shows that 1H NMR spectroscopy continually demonstrates reliability, accuracy, convenience, and advantages over conventional analytical methods in determination of the level of oxidation of edible oil during frying and storage through monitoring changes in several proton signals of oil, including olefinic, bisallylic and allylic protons. This modern analytical method is shown within this text to be used to identify oxidation products, including primary oxidation products such as hydroperoxides and conjugated dienes and secondary products such as aldehydes, ketones, epoxides and their derivatives. By identifying intermediates and final oxidation products, many oxidation mechanisms could be elucidated. A relatively newer method, the text demonstrates that 13C NMR and 31P NMR spectroscopy can also provide additional information on the molecular structure of an oxidation product. Backgrounds, principles, and advantages over conventional methods, most recent advances, and future prospects of these methods are discussed. Advances in NMR Spectroscopy for Lipid Oxidation Assessment begins by covering the various mechanisms of lipid oxidation, including various methods to determine oxidation products. NMR spectroscopy is then covered, including its applications in foods. The next section focuses on 1H NMR Spectroscopy, including its use for assessment of lipid oxidation during oil storage and frying. The following section focuses on 13C NMR spectroscopy, including its use in determining and identifying oxidation products and mechanisms. A final section focuses on 31P NMR spectroscopy for assessment of lipid oxidation.

Анотація: This comprehensive and unique text presents a full overview of downstream processing useful for those new to the concept as well as professionals with experience in the area. The history and theoretical principles of Aqueous Two-Phase Systems (ATPS) are covered in depth. Information on ATPS characterization and application is included, and ATPS equilibria and system parameters that have significant effect on partition behavior are studied. Aqueous Two-Phase Systems for Bioprocess Development for the Recovery of Biological Products addresses specific applications of ATPS for the recovery and partial purification of high molecular weight compounds such as proteins, nucleic acids and polysaccharides, particulate bioproducts such as cells and organelles and low molecular weight compounds. Non-conventional strategies involving ATPS such as affinity systems, continuous liquid-liquid fractionation stages and the recovery from plant extracts are presented. Economic analysis of the application of ATPS in comparison to other fractionation techniques, particularly liquid chromatography, is considered, as are opportunity and current trends in the ATPS research area. Each chapter utilizes the contributors' experimental expertise in traditional and non-conventional ATPS strategies, as well as analysis of areas of opportunity and perspectives on the development and future applications of ATPS in both the lab and larger scale operations. The result is a thorough and singular overview of ATPS which has not been matched by any other text on the market. .

Анотація: This thesis describes lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals (LCLCs) with exotic elastic and viscous properties. The first part of the thesis presents a thorough analysis of the elastic and viscous properties of LCLCs as functions of concentration, temperature and ionic contents, while the second part explores an active nematic system: living liquid crystals, which represent a combination of LCLC and living bacteria. LCLCs are an emerging class of liquid crystals that have shown profound connections to biological systems in two aspects. First, the assembly process of the chromonic aggregates is essentially the same as DNA oligomers and other super-molecular assemblies of biological origin. LCLCs thus provide an excellent model system for studying physical properties such as the elasticity and viscosity of these supramolecular assemblies. Second, LCLCs are biocompatible, thus serving as a unique anisotropic matrix to interface with living systems such as bacteria. This thesis deepens our understanding of both aspects. The noncovalent nature of chromonic aggregation produces the unique viscoelasticity to be found in LCLCs, which differs dramatically from that of traditional LCs. Anisotropic interactions between LCLCs and bacteria lead to fascinating phenomena such as the deformation of LCLCs with a characteristic wavelength determined by the elasticity of the LCLCs and the activity of the bacteria, orientationally controlled trajectories of bacteria and visualization of 24 nm flagella motion.

Анотація: The series Topics in Current Chemistry Collections presents critical reviews from the journal Topics in Current Chemistry organized in topical volumes. The scope of coverage is all areas of chemical science including the interfaces with related disciplines such as biology, medicine and materials science. The goal of each thematic volume is to give the non-specialist reader, whether in academia or industry, a comprehensive insight into an area where new research is emerging which is of interest to a larger scientific audience. Each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years are presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed. The coverage is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of the field or include large quantities of data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating on the methodological thinking that will allow the non-specialist reader to understand the information presented. Contributions also offer an outlook on potential future developments in the field.

Анотація: This book explores the mechanics of star formation, the process by which matter pulls together and creates new structures. Written for science enthusiasts, the author presents an accessible explanation of how stars are born from the interstellar medium and giant molecular clouds. Stars produce the chemicals that lead to life, and it is they that have enabled the conditions for planets to form and life to emerge. Although the Big Bang provided the spark of initiation, the primordial universe that it sired was born hopelessly sterile. It is only through the continued recycling of the interstellar medium, star formation, and stellar evolution that the universe has been animated beyond a chaotic mess of elementary atomic particles, radiation, dark matter, dark energy, and expanding spacetime. Using the Milky Way and the Eagle Nebula in particular as case studies, Beech follows every step of this amazing process. .

Анотація: This book shows how the use of biodegradable plastics in agriculture may exert a profound positive impact in the plasticulture. Starting from the organic chemistry approach to biodegradable and compostable plastics, either natural or synthetic, the book analyzes the huge area of existing bioplastics for protected cultivation (mulching, direct cover, low tunnels) from technological as well as agronomic approaches. The book then describes recent results of a new approach, sprayable biodegradable mulching, which resides on the use of waterborne polysaccharides and cellulosic fibers. A further chapter describes the research and technology of biodegradable plastics for different agricultural practices. A chapter on Life cycle assessment (LCA) of biodegradable plastics for agriculture, and one on existing and developing normative in the field complete the book. This book is then useful to agronomists, chemical and materials engineers, polymer technologists and scientists, as well as to a more general audience of educated people who are interested in the application of green chemistry principles to the vast world of crop production. Mario Malinconico is Research Director at the Institute of Polymers, Composites and Biomaterials of National Research Council, Italy.
